Some of the things non-profit organizations say to try and attract money are mostly hyperbole. Tiered systems… the hallowed right to use their logo… statistics that list percentages but not an actual number of attendees… but we're not messing around here. We're just going to give it to you plain and simple. Everything we do to set this up costs money. The detailed budget document is available upon request. The more money we have, the better we can make this. We can rent better equipment for the venues, and we could fly in some very cool lecturers for translated conversations about the moviemaking arts.
Even with our tiny budget, we're getting the word out, and having an original series of themed screenings never before attempted here in China's capital. We counted a good 500+ attendees at the first weeklong series, and 1000+ at the second! Our press coverage for the 3rd New Beijing International Movie Week, and our 4th edition in 2010, retitled The Beijing International Movie Festival, has reached hundreds of thousands, if not MILLIONS of people via international television, famous websites, radio shows, print magazines, and aggressive online word-of-mouth marketing through popular BBS sites. If you want names, then here you go: CCTV6's 爱拍电影, FRANCE24 TV, Radio Italia, China Radio International, Beijing Radio 774, Mtime.com, Aujourd'hui en Chine, Hotspot 大周末, DV Times, ALL the English language magazines in Beijing… If you want links, search on Google or send us a specific request for our press documentation archive. The final count of attendees for 2009, including 23 screenings in March and April, and the Emmy-nominated director of "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" coming to present her new movie at several major Beijing Universities, in the end exceeded 3000 happy moviegoers visiting our events that season! (50 – 100 people at each small event, 14 small events. 200-400 people at each large event, 6 large events.) At the 2010 screening series, with 23 small events throughout June and 5 large events at the beginning of July, we lost count of attendance. It was at least as many as 2009, in less than half the equivalent time period.
All of us festival organizers have been and are continuing to hold multiple alternative movie screenings every month with new people attending each time, and association with us goes beyond one week in Summer or Winter- it goes year-round, to a burgeoning community of tens-of-thousands of moviegoers attending a wide variety of events!
So there are three main reasons to partner with us. The first is a steady stream of publicity to a large and growing audience every month until the end of time. The second is because it is a wonderful deed to support grassroots moviemaking in China, where artists still know what struggle truly means! The third is our commitment to all small movie clubs and to the Chinese government to keep our events positive and beneficial to all aspects of a harmonious society, while growing them to meet international standards.
We are collecting letters of support from many countries' embassies in a bid to start an official Beijing International Film Festival to inspire Chinese filmmakers and promote their new works among amazing artists from around the world- Showing these movies to the public in a fun and accessible festival atmosphere! This is not only where the next Jia Zhangke will be discovered, it is where the next Fassbinder, the next Aronofsky, the next Spielberg, will be discovered!
Just send an e-mail if you think your organization could benefit from exposure to our audience. We advertise regularly in all major English publications in Beijing as well as many Chinese publications, websites, and other standard media channels all with circulation ranging from 50,000 into the millions.
