We showed 40-some movies from all over the world during the December 2007 week of events. About 27 shorts, 8 feature-length, and 7 documentaries. A few less in June - August 2008, 15 features including documentaries, and 21 shorts. But then in 2009 we just went nuts! 24 screenings in March - April! And a whole new series of 6 more in May. By now we've lost count of how many movies we're shown in 2009, but last we checked it was over 30 feature length films including documentaries, and over 50 shorts!
One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is- "Why aren't you showing more Chinese movies?" The answer? We show and promote other groups' showings of Chinese indie movies year-round. We host at least 1 public event every month where people come together to watch Chinese indie movies. In China, locally produced indie movies are currently more accessible than the foreign ones we receive through Withoutabox.com. The New Beijing International Movie Week is a showcase for culturally aware, socially acceptable movies that Chinese audiences would not otherwise have the opportunity to see.
