Silent Shame

How come more people are not aware of Japan's role in war crimes in Asia during WWII? This journey will begin with confronting a modern people with its controversial and sometimes shameful past. A Japanese-born filmmaker learns more about the atrocities committed by a nation by meeting veterans, researchers, and activists.
The film continues by delving into a past that many Japanese find too painful to explore. Archival footage clearly illustrates a basic history of Asia intercut with interviews of Japanese veterans and historical researchers detailing war crimes carried out by the Japanese. This section segues into a segment about 'Comfort Women'. Interviews with Korean rape victims and their Japanese perpetrators, finally give a voice to these often forgotten victims of WWII. Human experimentation and biological warfare is explored in segment number three, and in a rare interview, a Japanese veteran details how he assisted in human experimentation. This segment closes with the filmmaker interviewing several American POWs about their brutal treatment during their imprisonment.
In the course of making this documentary, the filmmaker realizes that Japanese researchers and activists receive tremendous amount of resistance on this topic by right wing Japanese. The journey closes with the filmmaker interviewing Japanese veterans, researchers and activists in an attempt to discover why the Japanese people are so reluctant to talk about the unpleasant side of their history.

The Desert Of Forbidden Art
80 Min. – Directed by Tchavdar Georgiev and Amanda Pope – Russia / USA / Uzbekistan

How does art survive in a time of oppression? During the Soviet rule artists who stay true to their vision are executed, sent to mental hospitals or Gulags.
Their plight inspires young Igor Savitsky. He pretends to buy state-approved art but instead daringly rescues 40,000 forbidden fellow artist’s works and creates a museum in the desert of Uzbekistan, far from the watchful eyes of the KGB. Though a penniless artist himself, he cajoles the cash to pay for the art from the same authorities who are banning it. Savitsky amasses an eclectic mix of Russian Avant-Garde art. But his greatest discovery is an unknown school of artists who settle in Uzbekistan after the Russian revolution of 1917, encountering a unique Islamic culture, as exotic to them as Tahiti was for Gauguin. They develop a startlingly original style, fusing European modernism with centuries-old Eastern traditions.
Ben Kingsley, Sally Field and Ed Asner voice the diaries and letters of Savitsky and the artists. Intercut with recollections of the artists’ children and rare archival footage, the film takes us on a dramatic journey of sacrifice for the sake of creative freedom.
Described as “one of the most remarkable collections of 20th century Russian art” and located in one of the world’s poorest regions, today these paintings are worth millions, a lucrative target for Islamic fundamentalists, corrupt bureaucrats and art profiteers. The collection remains as endangered as when Savitsky first created it, posing the question whose responsibility is it to preserve this cultural treasure.
Summer Pasture (Sneak Peek)
87 min. – Directed by Lynn True and Nelson Walker – USA / China, Tibet Autonomous Region

Summer Pasture is a feature-length documentary about a nomadic couple living with their infant daughter in the high grasslands of eastern Tibet. The film offers unique access to a highly insular community and a sensitive portrait of a young family at a time of great transition.
Locho and his wife Yama live in Dzachukha, eastern Tibet — nicknamed '5-most' by Chinese for being the highest, coldest, poorest, largest, and most remote county in Sichuan Province, China. They depend on their herd of yaks for survival, just as their ancestors have for generations. In recent years however, Dzachukha has undergone rapid development, which poses an escalating threat to nomadic life.
Summer Pasture evolves as an intimate exploration of Locho and Yama's personalities, relationship, and the complicated web of circumstances that surrounds them. Over its course we witness their travails with illness, infidelity, and the dissolution of their community. In the face of mounting challenges, Locho and Yama gradually reveal the personal sacrifice they will make to ensure their daughter's future.
Summer Pasture is a unique alternative to the vast majority of films about Tibet, which are often shot in Diaspora communities in India and Nepal, and portray romanticized or overtly politicized views of Tibetan culture. Through it's subtle observation of Locho and Yama's character, Summer Pasture provides a deeply personal account of what it means to be a nomad in a swiftly modernizing world, and a universal story of family survival.

This is the story of a strawberry who yearned for independence.
Imagine a story about hope, frustration, occupation, globalization and politics, and at its center a small red fruit-a strawberry. The mother plants arrive from Israel to Gaza, where in the fields of Beit Lahiya the plants are cultivated to produce the brilliant red fruit destined for marketing in Europe.
In this fateful year in Gaza, filmmaker Ayelet Heller and her Gazan crew documented the agricultural cycle of the fruit and the political events that directly affected the lives of the farmers who cultivate it..
Out of these green fields, red fruit, sky and sea, could emerge a pastoral image of farmers earning their livelihood by working the land. But in Gaza it is not the laws of nature that rule but those of the Occupation.

25 min. – Directed by Jonathan Sigworth – India / USA

Jonathan, a 19-year-old American student, fell from a 70 ft. cliff in northern India in February, 2006. When he woke up in a hospital, he was told that he might never walk again. Jonathan has limited upper-body strength and no sensation or movement in his hands or below his arms. The same kind of injury is shared by two Indian military veterans: Krishnan, 46, a resident at the military rehabilitation center in Pune; and Navin, 38, who is living independently and starting a school for street children in Delhi. The movie tells their stories and the stories of Riya, 14, who was following instructions when her coach told her to dive into the shallow end of the pool; and Rahul, 23, who was defending his uncle from a drunk neighbor when he was injured. This inspiring film asks the question, what is the good reason that these five friends are still alive.

Elvis Presley had all the fame and power any man could want, but still, he wanted more. After flight next to a U.S. Senator, Elvis hand writes a letter to President Nixon, requesting a meeting. Elvis made sure the president know he was not about to leave town until the two had a face-to-face. NEW BEIJING: Reinventing a City

53 min. – Directed by Georgia Wallace-Crabbe – China / Australia

As China emerges as the new economic powerhouse of the 21-century, no one can disrupt the biggest construction boom in the world's history. As International architects create icons in Beijing, we marvel at the city's new face. With the end of the Olympics hundreds of new projects are expected to begin. The architects of the iconic buildings (Watercube, Birds Nest, Stadium, National Theatre) and their future visions contrast with that of hutong activist Zhang Jinqi’s project to photograph the last heritage districts of the old city, which are soon to be demolished. With 400 cities of the size of Beijing to build by 2020 China has little time to reflect.
