In addition to our feature films, we're also going to be showing 24 excellent shorts from around the world, with entries from the United States, France, Israel, Japan, China, Korea, Germany, Canada, Singapore, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Austria.

It’s 1953 and beyond the Tokyo Metropolis, deep in the mountains of Gotemba, a jidei-geki (period drama) samurai movie is about to begin production.
By a little persistence and a stroke of good luck a small time actor, Nanshu, gets the chance of a lifetime: a lead role as one of the eight samurai that will save a village from bandits.
After months of training, Nanshu is betting it all that this role will make him the greatest actor in the History of Japan. But little does he know that the Director is having doubts about his choice. And there is only one thing Nanshu didn’t prepare for: being fired.
THE 8TH SAMURAI is a tragic comedy about fate from writer/director Justin Ambrosino that pays homage to the samurai films, Italian Neorealism and the American comedies of the 1950s.

After she grew up in a small village, she moved to Beijing for work. Then she moved to Tokyo, got married and delivered a baby son. As a life of A-Chu changed dramatically over these periods, China also went through a rapid and dramatic change.
After so many years after she left her village, she went back to visit home with her son. There, under a patch of blue sky, she shows a memory of her growth in this village that led to existence of herself and her son.

The distraught Realtor interrupts the couple and surrenders her eyeglasses so that the husband may finally get the truth he's been searching for.

It's opening night and The Hirosaki Players have come all the way from Japan for a one-night-only New York performance. With thirty minutes left before curtain, Kentaro, the aging star of the play, is nowhere to be found. Though his memory is failing, Kentaro refuses to accept that he must have his lines fed to him through an earpiece. Instead, he plots to pare down the lines in the final scene, but meets fierce opposition from the playwright, Tsubasa—Kentaro's son. A struggle ensues between Kentaro, fighting for his pride as an actor, and Tsubasa, striving to have his work recognized by the world. After a bitter tug-of-war, the performance finally begins. But the feud between father and son comes to a head during the last scene of the play, when Tsubasa plays a little trick on his father to show him who's boss…with disastrous results. With both men's pride at stake, there's no telling how the showdown will end.

Director David Bitton says of Parking Space:
The first thing I had ever shot on 16mm was in 1999. It was a very rough version of the first scene of this film, where the Odd Man, sitting on the street corner with his reel-to-reel tape recorder, confronts a man who’s simply looking for a parking space. I only managed to shoot half of that scene, using a World War II-era Bolex camera and editing on an old Steenbeck. I used that clip to get into film school, and then promptly forgot about it.
Fast-forward to 2008 – I had written an ambitious short film script, but had not been able to get any funding for it. I realized it had been 5 years since I had shot a film and decided that I needed to badly. That’s when I re-discovered Parking Space. I watched that little half-scene again and despite its many flaws, I saw an energy in it that I found inspiring. It had a dark mood and atmosphere that I wanted to revisit and try to reproduce.
I wrote a new, more mature version of the script, seeing the hunt for a parking space as a way to explore the theme of obsession and what it can lead people to do, often in the name of something very trivial. Within a month of completing the script, I was on set filming.
I was spending my own money, but decided to shoot on Super 16mm rather than HD in order to recapture the feel of the 1999 version. To that same end, I edited the film on 16mm using a Steenbeck and although I did the effects digitally, I tried as much as possible to maintain a classic, optical effect look. My cinematographer and composer both did an especially wonderful job as well bringing that mood I was searching for to higher level.
So after 10 years, it’s finally done and is something I’m extremely proud of. My only hopes are that it connects to you in some way, that is doesn’t come off as too serious, and that most of all you enjoy watching it.

Adam Christian Clark
A graduate of The University of Southern California's School of Cinema Television, Adam Christian Clark pulls story and narrative from unique life perspective. Born on the continent of Antarctica, Clark's parents are former NASA scientists whose romance blossomed during an extended arctic expedition. Impressively, Adam was directing episodes of Big Brother for CBS while still enrolled as an undergraduate at USC. He has been fascinated by China and Chinese culture ever since he lived there for a year while directing a television show.

Through Michael, Robert gets the only real human connection available in his life. But human connection is not the only thing Robert wants from Michael. Robert must pay a dear price for the brief escape Michael sells and is forced to pawn the very emblem of his soul, the trumpet he has owned since childhood.

In The Terms, the struggle between youthful dreams and aged resignation plays out in a timeless and barren landscape. A boy sets fire to his home and unleashes his father's misanthropic malice. The father declares he's going to shoot his son, but gives him a small hope of survival: they negotiate the arrangement under which one shot will be fired. Contingencies are accounted for, yet when the time comes, the shooting has an unanticipated outcome.
The Terms blends a muted palette with its themes of isolation and loneliness, providing a brief glimpse into a microcosm isolated from our world in the literal sense, yet strangely evocative of universal themes of social change, youthful idealism, and cynical despair.

James, an American soldier in Iraq, has just become a POW in Fallujah. More than anything, he wants to escape in order to fulfill a promise with his childhood best friend and first love, Emma. Captured alongside him is another American soldier, Misha.
In order to escape his state of confinement, James retreats intermittently to his memories of a young Emma and his late mother.
When Misha is assaulted by two Iraqi soldiers, James decides that he?s the one to save her. As he stages their escape, air strikes from outside the walls throw the prison into a state of panic. James and Misha fight to save their lives, Misha to return to her son, James to find his way back to Emma.

The story takes a dramatic turn as the boy decides to take his fate in his own hands, forever changing the lives of the people around him.
A different take on the outlook of human trafficking shown from the interaction between the captors and the victim's point of view and how it affects us all.

At the age of sixteen I had an experience, while staying at a hotel in Valencia (Spain), that has lived with me ever since. As I turned on light in the bathroom it flickered for a couple of seconds. What I saw in the mirror during those seconds was my thirty-year-old self, an older face. It was an optical illusion, of course, yet I couldn’t stop wondering where I would be then…well, now.
I am also inspired by the theory that time is a compounded mass and that the past and the future co-exists. “The Empty Space In Between’ taps into that idea and the film moves effortlessly though time and space.
Cassandra exists in the emptiness between two certainties; the past and the future, life and death. She finds herself in the darkness of her mind and she decides to live there, to be connected and alive, just for a moment, even if it's destructive, even if in the end it means death.
