All kids love epic adventures involving swords and the truth is, there’s a kid in all of us. Currently there are many feature narratives that hold the sword as a prominent part of the story telling process. By way of current examples, there’s a sword fight scene in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Fool’s Gold, Nim’s Island, and even in the cartoon, Bee Movie. It’s remarkable the attraction of swords in film. Swords are everywhere in films from the Chronicles of Narnia to the Pirates of the Caribbean.

The blade’s popularity shows no sign of waning with Warner Brothers geared up to produce War of the Gods and Legendary Pictures preparing for Clash of the Titans, not to mention the two Hobbit films in pre-production and the rest of the Narnia films scheduled for production and release over coming years. Swords hold a central theme in all these films. Reclaiming the Blade explores swords both in our modern media and in the hands of those practitioners and academics who study them in their historical context.

All over the world, groups of practitioners are reclaiming the knowledge of the Renaissance sword masters. Reclaiming the Blade showcases seven Historical Martial Arts groups in Europe and several in the United States. These groups are resurrecting these ancient techniques from manuals written in the 15th and 16th century by masters in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and many other western European nations. The interest in this resurgence is exploding as Fight Clubs form all over the world and membership flourishes.

Knowledge is the Beginning 知识就是开始

Knowledge is the Beginning is the story of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra where young Arabs and Jews perform side by side. The film illustrates how prejudices are overcome during rehearsals, concerts and after-concert celebrations. It also demonstrates the problems that crop up occasionally and how music can help people from different points of view find common ground. For Daniel Barenboim, founder of the ensemble, the orchestra is a symbol for what could be achieved in the Middle East.

The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, a name derived from a collection of poems by Goethe, today embraces eighty Arab and Israeli musicians aged thirteen to twenty-six. Director Paul Smaczny has followed the orchestra since its inception. The film chronicles all five summer workshops in Weimar and Seville, Barenboim’s visit to Ramallah and Jerusalem in May 2004 – during which he received the prestigious Wolf Prize at the Knesset – as well as the sensational concert in Ramallah in August 2005.

The flowers of rowan are delicate and fragile and bloom for less then ten days. The same appeared to be the lives of the young girls who were sent to clear mines left after the World War II on the fields of northern Russia.

According to the resolution of the State defense committee a number of groups were formed from civilians who after a short instruction were sent to clear mines left after the Nazi invasion.

The groups consisted mainly from sixteen-eighteen year old girls.

They were young, their life was in bloom and their hearts were longing to love. Marusya was a promising artist. Polina, a young widow, was learning to live without her beloved. But the destiny had its own plans for their lives. It prepared for each girl her own waltz on the mine field.

No book has ever been written about that brave feat. The film is based on a material received during the research for a documentary about girls-mine-seekers in Vologodskaya region of Russia. This is the true story that the filmmakers got to learn from the interviews of survivors.

Set during the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's reunification with China, FOG tells the story of Wai who suffers from a rare amnesia that wipes his memory entirely clean. Relying on the conflicting recollection of his family and friends, Wai begins to unwrap the mystery behind his previous life which is being deliberately hidden from him by the people closest to him. Now he must confront the consequences as dark secrets are revealed. Taking place in a city at a historical crossroads and in search of it's own identity, FOG follows Wai through Hong Kong as he attempts to restart his life and embarks on a journey of self-discovery and redemption.

North Africa, II. WW, Fall 1941. Jiri Pospichal, twenty years old, signs up as a volunteer in the Czechoslovak army. His naive ideas about heroism are rawly confronted with the hell of the African desert, complicated relationships in his unit and the ubiquitous threat of death. All this takes its cruel toll in the shape of his gradual loss of self respect and courage. He is full of self-confidence and patriotic ideals, yet at the same time is deeply frustrated by his father, whom he views as a collaborator. His closest companion is a Jewish soldier, Jan Lieberman, in many ways more mature. Their opposite, in turn, is Corporal Kohák, a former member of the French Foreign Legion, for whom warfare is above all a profession The psychological drama between these three characters, the differing attitudes and personalities of each of them, are, during the course of the story and most clearly in its dramatic climax, brought into confrontation with a clear and harsh test of the moral character of all.

The gigantic trees of Pemberton – a logging town and the film’s location in Western Australia’s South West – are almost as big as the boys’ dreams. Yet there seems no escape from their extended creative rut until the big news is announced: Pemberton is to host its inaugural Short Film Festival.

At first wild with excitement, they’re soon plain wild to discover that ex-classmate and the town’s favourite son, Cody Benson, is also making a film for the Festival. But the boys have a plan. And it doesn’t need a script. They make it their mission to sabotage Cody’s film rather than focusing energy on creating their own.

It’s during this journey of comical mayhem and misguided revenge that they re-discover the creative magic they once shared and Produce a film that just might return them to their former days of celluloid glory.

Die Entbehrlichen (The Dispensables 一次)

The Dispensables (Based on a true story) The tragic story being told in this movie is about an eleven year old child growing up in a lower working class family. The mothers alcoholism reached a level that brought her in a psychiatry ward for detoxification and the father, not really able to educate his child anyway, ends up committing suicide in the living room. The child tries to cover up the death of his father out of fear to be brought to an orphanage, so he spends two weeks with the corpse of his father. As he can behave more freely while on his own, he starts to develop features he disliked in his father and to treat his surroundings the same way. Not only the constant confrontation with the continually disintegrating corpse of his father, but also the social interactions with his girlfriend, his grandmother (the mother of the dead), his teacher and the neighbour put the boy close to his psychic and physical limits. Whenever he is feeling overwhelmed and helpless in a current situation, flashbacks are used to tell more about the lifes of his parents, being jobless and caught in a draining circle of alcohol, temporary jobs, dealing with authorities, aggression, hope and living on a social edge. Over and over again they put themselves back to together, attepting to lead a normal life, but ultimately failing because of prejudices, burocracy and even the own incapability to solve problems. The film is the portrait of a family without real chances, a family like so many others in our society, showing the dramatic effects on human interactions due to changes of the social situation. The persons in our story are living in circumstances where dream careers or highly paid jobs are out of reach, instead their life is a fight for sheer survival. The circumstances our characters are struggling in prove the propagated claim for social justice of your achievement-oriented society wrong."

《一次》根据真实故事改编。这部电影讲述了一个悲惨的故事,关于一个成长在下层工人阶级的十一岁小孩。孩子的妈妈酗酒过度,爸爸又不可能好好教育孩子,最终在客厅自杀。孩子想掩饰父亲的死亡,不然有可能因成为孤儿而被带到孤儿院。所以和和他父亲的尸体在一起度过了两个星期的时间……

A montage of songs, collage and unconventional narrative style, CLEAR BLUE TUESDAY explores self-discovery in the face of adversity. CBT follows the lives of eleven New Yorkers over the course of seven years, each year on a Tuesday in September, as they try to achieve the dreams that drew them to the city.

CBT was developed with eleven New York actor-singer-songwriters through an extended rehearsal process with director Elizabeth Lucas. Using personal journeys and improv as a springboard for developing fictional characters and narrative, the cast wrote the songs they sing. The resulting stories and songs are both fictional and intensely personal, exploring the difference between the goals we pursue and what makes us happy and how the expanding gap between the two becomes more visible against the backdrop of catastrophic world events.
